Accredited Inhaler Technique Training
Tuesday, 17 February, 2015 6.30pm for 7pm start
The North Devon Hospice, Deer Park Road, Newport, Barnstaple EX32 0HU
Organised by NEW Devon CCG this training is being offered as Advanced Inhaler Technique Training, by Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences working with the leading expert in inhaler technique, Jon Bell to develop a quality assured and sustainable educational programme.
Across NEW Devon CCG we are currently undertaking a number of pieces of work around respiratory medication.
This includes looking at asthma prescribing in the optimising prescribing scheme, particularly in relation to high dose inhaled corticosteroids and high quantities of SABA inhalers.
Alongside this we have been accredited by Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to provide advanced inhaler technique training to other healthcare professionals. This training is in conjunction with the leading expert in inhaler technique, Jon Bell to develop quality assured and sustainable educational programme.
There has been a growing recognition within the health service that training healthcare professionals in effective inhaler technique, and the use of these skills in consultations with respiratory patients, can have a dramatic effect on patient outcomes in terms of effective control of their condition.
Two events have been organised and were fully booked, therefore we have put some further dates in the diary. Please note that if places are booked on these events and attendees do not attend, this will be followed up as a lot of time and effort has gone into arranging these events.
We will be providing ‘Advanced Inhaler technique Training’. Attending training event will enable participants to:
- Describe the mechanism of different inhalers
- Explain how inspiratory flow can effect drug delivery for different inhalers
- Counsel a patient on the correct use of all inhalers
- Check a patient’s metered dose inhaler technique using the Aerosol Inhalation Monitor (AIM)
- Select the appropriate inhaler for a patient using the In-check device
Some sessions have been set up in the Northern Locality which are detailed on the attached invite form. Otherwise we are able to come out and offer groups of healthcare professionals this training at times suitable to all involved.
If you or your teams would like to book into the attached training then please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also please note the as part of the respiratory work which we are undertaking at present there is a number of resources which have been developed.
All of the resources are available on the NEW Devon CCG website: http://www.newdevonccg.nhs.uk/information-for-healthcare-professionals/respiratory/101003
One of the new resources which is available is ‘Inhaled Corticosteriods in Adults: Prescribing Guidance for Healthcare Professionals’. This guidance gives general prescribing guidance and allows prescribers and pharmacists to see at a glance when a steroid card should be given with inhaled corticosteroids. This information has been developed from information in the BNF and previous documents from the London Respiratory Network and is current at October 2014.
The guidance will be kept up to date when changes are made to the formulary.
Please take the time to have a look at the resources available on the website and ensure this is linked to practice systems where appropriate.
